This room is located on the first floor of the Convent van Chièvres. To reach this building, you walk from the car park some distance into the Grand Beguinage. In view of the location’s historical character, the streets are paved with authentic cobblestones. Faculty Club does not have a lift.
St Barbara was one of the saints who were dropped from the official church calendar in 1969. Legend has it that her father locked her away in a tower in order to protect her from importunate suitors. When he discovered that she had secretly converted to Christianity, he beheaded her, after which he was struck by lightning.
St Barbara was known as one of the three holy virgins, together with St Catherine and Margaret of Antioch. She enjoyed great popularity among the Beguines. Her (unofficial) feast day is 4 December.
