St Anne was the mother of the Virgin Mary. By tradition, she and her husband Joachim were prosperous, but childless. Because of this, Joachim’s sacrifice in the temple was refused, whereupon he withdrew with his herd into the desert. Anne thought that he was dead, and prayed to God for a child. Her prayer was heard. At the same time, Joachim received a visit in the desert from an angel, who told him that his wife was with child. He returned home and they had a daughter, Mary.
The veneration of St Anne reached its high point in the 15th and 16th centuries, and during this period was depicted in a particular arrangement called Anna te Drieën: Anna with Mary and Jesus. Among other places, such an image can be found in the painting above the main altar in the Church of St John the Baptist.
St Anne’s feast day is 20 July.
