Swerius

This room is named after the three Swerius sisters: Anna (+ 1666), Barbara (+ 1671) and Maria Magdalena (+ 1690). All three are buried at the Beguinage church.

This room is located on the second floor of the Infirmary building. In view of our buildings’ authentic character, we do not have a lift.

A little history

This room is named after the three Swerius sisters: Anna (+ 1666), Barbara (+ 1671) and Maria Magdalena (+ 1690). All three are buried at the Beguinage church. However, only Maria Magdalena lived here as a Beguine, probably in the House of St Mary Magdalene on Kerkstraat (no.11). Presumably her sisters lived with her. The exceptionally well preserved hoisting wheel was used to lift goods that were stored in this space, which was formerly an attic.
